COEN MITCHELL

PARAMEDICAL & POST-MASTECTOMY TATTOO SPECIALIST

I offer a range of paramedical and 3D areola/nipple tattooing services, depending on your body, your healing, and what you are hoping to achieve.

These services can include realistic 3D areola and nipple tattooing after surgery, single or double areola recreation, touch-ups or re-work of previous areola tattooing, and selected non-mastectomy related areola/nipple tattooing such as recolouring, colour boosting, shape balancing or areola extension.

Every person’s situation is different, so the right option will depend on your skin, scarring, previous surgery, existing tattooing and personal preference.

Please click the buttons below to learn more about each service.

Throughout my career, I have worked across many areas of tattooing, including realism, colour, custom design, cover-ups and large-scale work. These skills naturally led me into paramedical tattooing, where technical control, colour understanding, placement and working carefully with changed or scarred skin are all incredibly important.

But this work is not just technical for me.

In 2018, I lost my aunty to breast cancer. That loss changed the way I looked at tattooing and made me think deeply about how my work could help people in a more personal and meaningful way. It led me toward post-mastectomy tattooing, 3D areola and nipple tattooing, scar cover work and restorative tattooing for clients who have been through surgery, scarring or major changes to their body.

I understand that this kind of tattooing can feel very personal. For some people, it is about feeling more balanced again. For others, it is about reclaiming part of their body, softening scarring, feeling more confident, or simply feeling more like themselves when they look in the mirror.

There is no one way you are supposed to feel, and there is no pressure to know exactly what you want before getting in touch.

At Tattoo Gold, I offer realistic 3D areola and nipple tattooing, custom scar cover designs, restorative tattooing and re-work of previous paramedical tattooing where possible. Every appointment is approached with care, privacy, patience and respect. My goal is to make sure you feel comfortable, heard and fully supported throughout the process.

This work is about more than creating the appearance of something on the skin. It is about helping you feel connected to your body again in whatever way feels right for you.

Paramedical and 3D Areola/Nipple Tattoo Services (Any Gender)

Single 3D areola/nipple tattooing
This is for one side only, usually created to complement or visually balance an existing areola or nipple on the opposite breast. The aim is to create a soft, natural and realistic result that works with your skin tone, shape and body.

Double 3D areola/nipple tattooing
This service is for clients who have lost both areolas or nipples and would like them recreated through realistic 3D colour tattooing. This can be based on your previous appearance, reference images, or a new shape, size and tone that feels right for you.

Touch-ups, re-work or correction of existing 3D areola/nipple tattooing
If you have previously had areola or nipple tattooing done elsewhere and are not happy with the result, I may be able to help improve, soften, recolour or rework the area. This will depend on the existing tattoo, skin condition and what is possible once healed.

Custom scar cover or decorative tattooing after surgery
Not everyone wants realistic 3D areola or nipple tattooing. Some clients prefer a custom design that covers, frames or works with their scars in a more artistic way. This could include floral work, ornamental designs, flowing body pieces or something more personal and symbolic.

Non-mastectomy areola/nipple tattooing
I also offer selected areola and nipple tattooing services that are not related to breast cancer or mastectomy. This may include colour boosting, recolouring, shape adjustment, size balancing, areola extension or creating a more even appearance.

Custom areola shape or design
For some clients, the goal is not to recreate what was there before, but to create something that feels personal, beautiful or empowering in a different way. If you have a specific shape, design or direction in mind, we can talk through what may be possible.

I’d also consider adding one short line at the end:

If you are unsure which option applies to you, you are welcome to get in touch. We can talk through it gently and privately before anything is booked.

Mastectomy nipple tattoo

Mastectomy 3D Nipple Tattoo

Taking the first step towards your mastectomy 3D areola/nipple tattoo is a straightforward and caring process at

Tattoo Gold. Before following the below steps please read through the Frequently Asked Questions via this link.

Step 1: Get in touch

The first step is to contact me through the appointment form on my website.

If you feel comfortable, you are welcome to include a little about your journey, the service you are considering, and clear photos of the breast or chest area. I understand this can feel very personal, so please only share what you feel ready to share.

The more information I have, the better I can understand your situation and guide you properly.

Step 2: Consultation

Once I receive your enquiry, I will read through everything personally and get back to you.

Most consultations can begin through email, as this gives you time to explain things in your own words and ask questions without feeling rushed. If an in-person consultation is needed or preferred, we can talk about whether that is possible depending on where I am based at the time.

During the consultation, I will talk you through what may be possible, what I would recommend, how many sessions may be needed, the estimated time involved and the cost.

Step 3: Booking your appointment

If you feel comfortable moving forward, we can book your appointment.

These appointments are handled with care, privacy and respect. You are welcome to bring a trusted support person with you if that helps you feel more comfortable, but please let me know beforehand so I can make sure the space is prepared properly.

My goal is for you to feel safe, supported and fully in control throughout the appointment.

Step 4: Preparing for your appointment

Before your appointment, please try to get a good night’s sleep, eat properly and stay hydrated.

Wear soft, comfortable clothing that gives easy access to the area being tattooed. For 3D areola, nipple or breast/chest scar tattooing, it is usually best to avoid wearing a bra to or after the appointment if possible, so there are no skin imprints and so nothing rubs on the fresh tattoo.

You are also welcome to bring anything that helps you feel more settled, such as a clean pillow, blanket, headphones, snacks or a drink.

Step 5: Aftercare and healing

After your tattoo, I will go through the aftercare instructions with you properly so you know exactly what to do and what to expect while the area heals.

You will also receive clear aftercare information to take home. If you have any questions during the healing process, you are welcome to contact me directly rather than trying to work it out on your own.

I also recommend having your aftercare products ready before your appointment. I am proud to be associated with Skingraphica, a tattoo skincare system created specifically for tattooed skin, and I recommend it for supporting the healing stage and long-term care of your tattoo. You can find my Skingraphica purchase link on the home page of my website, which also gives you access to my exclusive discount.

This process is personal, and everyone’s journey is different. My role is to guide you with care, honesty and respect, and to help create something that supports how you want to feel in your body moving forward.

Non-Breast Cancer/Mastectomy Related Areola/Nipple services

I also offer selected areola and nipple tattooing services that are not related to breast cancer or mastectomy.

For some people, this may be about softening the colour, creating more balance, adjusting the shape, extending the areola, improving symmetry, or helping the area feel more in line with how they would like it to look.

These concerns can be very personal, and there is no need to feel embarrassed about asking. Many people quietly feel self-conscious about the size, shape, colour or tone of their areola or nipple, and tattooing can sometimes offer a subtle way to help create more confidence and comfort in your own skin.

Every case is different, so the approach will depend on your natural skin tone, existing colour, shape, texture and the result you are hoping for.

Below are some examples of my work outside of cancer and mastectomy-related tattooing. These clients came to me for their own personal reasons, and each result was created with care, privacy and respect for what they wanted to feel more comfortable with.

How to begin your journey with us

How to Begin Your Journey

The most important first step is giving your body enough time to heal properly after surgery.

In most cases, I recommend waiting at least 8–12 months before tattooing over post-surgery or scarred skin. This gives the scars time to settle and allows the skin to be in a much better condition for tattooing. The more settled the skin is, the better chance we have of creating a soft, natural and long-lasting result.

During that healing time, it can also be helpful to gently start thinking about what feels right for you.

If you are interested in 3D areola or nipple tattooing, you may want to think about the shape, size, colour and overall look you feel most comfortable with. Some people want to recreate what they had before surgery, while others prefer to create something new that feels right for who they are now.

If you are more interested in a custom tattoo design, you can start collecting ideas that feel meaningful or beautiful to you. This could be floral work, ornamental designs, something soft and feminine, something bold, or a piece that works with the natural shape of your body and scarring.

You do not need to have everything figured out before getting in touch. Even a few thoughts, reference images or feelings you are drawn to can be enough to begin the conversation.

When you feel ready, you are welcome to contact me through the appointment form on my website. I will read through your enquiry personally, and from there we can talk gently through your options and what may be possible for you.

REVIEWS

Reviews from our beautiful clients

“I want to thank you again for my beautiful tattoo and the respectful way you handled my appointment. When I looked at it for the first time in the mirror I just felt joy. When I got home the emotions came along with the tears as I thought about my journey and the tattoo being on my wish list from the beginning. It marks the end of a painful journey and the beginning of many years ahead as the new me. Below is my journey and my reason for the Tattoo.

Christmas Eve 2019 I was diagnosed with breast cancer in my right breast. I choose to have a mastectomy which I had January 2020. As my cancer was caught early due to a scheduled mammogram, nothing in the lymph nodes and having a mastectomy I didn’t need radiation or chemo but I have had to take hormone blockers. I then had my left breast off in November 2021 as I have chosen to go flat. The tattoo wasn’t really about scar coverage it was about putting something of beauty on the blank canvas that is my new chest. The fact that it covers some of my scar is a bonus. I now look in the mirror and see my tattoo and smile as it is beautiful, I don’t focus on what I have lost but how great my future is. It has brought me so much joy.”

“In 2019 at age 32, 6 weeks after having my third child, I was diagnosed with stage 3/grade 3 breast cancer. What followed was 2 years of countless appointments and treatments which took a huge toll on me physically and emotionally. Part of my treatment included a full mastectomy in which my nipple was removed. I was left feeling incomplete, and I hated looking at myself in the mirror to see the marks that cancer left on my body. It was a constant reminder of the hard times I went through. However, now with my new nipple, I barely notice all the scars and it’s made a huge difference in getting back to my (new) normal. I always joked about my funny looking breast after cancer and didn’t realize how emotional it would be to feel complete again.

Coen, you were such a gentleman the whole way through. You are a perfectionist and have such an amazing eye for detail. The work you do for people like myself is so inspiring and words can not express how thankful I am.  Now I can not wait to get another tattoo from you!”

“Diagnosed with breast cancer in 2012 at the age of 39, I had a left mastectomy and TRAM flap reconstruction.  I am forever grateful to the amazing surgeons I had and the options that private insurance gave me.  I had a nipple tattoo that was done by the nurse who worked for my plastic surgeon but 10 years on, this had completely faded.  I wanted to have the nipple tattoo redone and add some fine line flowers to celebrate the journey and milestone of 10 years.  We were referred to Coen Mitchell by another tattoo artist my husband knew and when I reached out to him about my idea he was very responsive and supportive. The design Coen came up with is perfect and the whole process was very smooth (and relatively painless given I don’t have a lot of feeling after the reconstruction).  I would thoroughly recommend Coen to anyone considering getting something similar done and I have found the results to be both less obvious (the nipple now looks Florence natural) and a celebration of my journey.  Thanks Coen”

“I was diagnosed at 36 in August 2010 with breast cancer which turned my world upside down. I had a mastectomy on my right breast and my nipple was also removed. I have an implant and also part of my back muscle was used for breast symmetry. I had nipple reconstruction done by my surgeon using my own skin which was amazing. I also had “tattooing” done on my aereola but this wasn’t permanent and it faded over time leaving a white area. This made me feel not fully complete as a woman. I have been following Coens work for a while and saw he had done nipple reconstructions so I reached out to him.

I meet with Coen to do some nipple tattooing. Recovering from the shock of having breast cancer and the removal of a breast as a woman you struggle with feeling incomplete or less than a woman. It took me a few years to adjust to this new normal.
Coen right from our first meeting you made me feel so comfortable and safe in your presence. I’m in awe of your talent and the kindness and empathy you show to a woman’s unique journey and rediscovering her self love 💕

You matched my nipple with such attention to detail. Your skill is second to none and I recommend you highly to any woman or man who have had breast cancer. Keep up your inspirational and dedicated mahi. Thank you once again for being part of my journey. Truely grateful 🙏🏻”

"Coen, my tattooist is a true professional. This was my first tattoo experience so was very scary for me regarding the pain etc.

My fears soon vanished as every step was explained to me & it was important to Coen that I was comfortable & happy with the final result.

I am absolutely delighted with what was achieved & I only wish that I'd done this years ago.

Thank you so much for your wonderful work which is so appreciated. 👌 Warm regards - Sue

I would highly recommend you to any friends that were considering getting a tattoo cosmetic or otherwise."

"About 15 years ago I had breast reduction surgery – for two reasons. First my breasts were big and saggy and secondly there is a long history of breast cancer in my family and reducing the amount of breast tissue would lower my chances of getting breast cancer.

Five years after that (October 2013) I felt the dreaded lump in my left breast. My mother, sister, aunt , grandmother all had (and survived) breast cancer – now me!.

I elected to have a mastectomy and reconstruction. These two surgeries left my nipple and areola a mess.

I am so grateful that Coen has been able to use his incredible skill to colour this area to make it look as natural as possible.

I am thrilled with the result – thank you Coen."

"In 2019 at age 26, I had a prophylactic bilateral mastectomy to reduce my chances of hereditary breast cancer. It was a no-brainer. However, with two young children, it was not easy. Two surgeries, multiple expander fills, and minor infections followed by my mum being diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer. The thought of another surgery to create nipples was too much.

I was assured the costly 3D nipple tattoos would be incredible and very realistic. Clearly, this was not the case. After two attempts, I said no to anymore. The lack of experience was obvious. I resigned to the fact that this was what I looked like now, and I should be grateful.

After losing Mum last year, I decided I wanted this chapter closed. I deserved better and wanted to look in the mirror confidently. After following Coen for years, I came across his nipple tattoos. I had always dreamed he would design something for me, but I didn't expect it to be nipples.

Coen, you are changing women's lives. Your skill and professionalism are unmatched. Thank you from the bottom of my heart."

"Coen is an incredibly talented artist, and I cannot recommend him highly enough to anyone considering 3D nipple tattooing. I did extensive research before choosing an artist, knowing I would need to travel regardless, I was prepared to go anywhere in New Zealand or Australia for the right person. I’m so grateful I found Coen, because his work and skill are truly exceptional.

In 2022, I underwent a double mastectomy after discovering I carry the BRCA2 gene. Every woman in my family has had breast cancer.

I found out about my gene status while pregnant with my first child, and only weeks later, my younger sister was diagnosed with breast cancer herself. Given the extremely high risk, I chose to have preventative surgery rather than face what felt like an inevitable cancer diagnosis and treatment journey later on.

These tattoos were absolutely worth the wait and the travel. They are beyond amazing, and they’ve given me back something I didn’t realise I had lost. I’m so thankful for Coen’s artistry and the care he puts into his work."
